A popular challenge is going around the YouTube and blogging community. This challenge is the What I Wore In High School beauty challenge. I decided this would be the perfect time to take on this challenge. It goes perfectly with the Back To School theme. I am 26 years old so it has been 8 years (OMGSH) since I have been in high school. I figured I would show you how I did my makeup in HS. I will also include 5 reasons I loved going back to school PLUS 5 lessons my 26-year-old self would have told my HS self. WARNING: There will be A LOT of funny GIFs that you will not want to miss!

Back To School (What I Wore In High School) Beauty Look:
This is totally what I use to look like in high school. This back to school look brought back so many memories of how I used to do my makeup. I was totally obsessed with glitter! I never did my eyebrows, never contoured my face, never applied highlighter, never wore lipstick (only lipgloss), never set my face with a setting spray, and really never used many makeup brushes (it was all about them fingers and sponges). Keep reading to see how I created my famous (totally kidding) high school makeup look. PS: I totally thought I was amazing at makeup back then! I have come such a long way (and still learning).
FACE:
I always did my face first (I now do my eyes first). I totally didn’t highlight or contour my face (I didn’t even know what that was). I also didn’t wear any blush. I thought blush made you look like a clown. Note: I was actually a clown so I shied away from blush. I really didn’t know how to apply blush properly (totally thought you just dot it on the apples of your cheeks). I also did a VERY bad thing. I never wore sunscreen on my face. This is a huge NO NO!
Foundation:
I used the lightest foundation I could find. I usually used liquid foundation and shook it up good before applying. I would dab it on my face and use either my fingers or a sponge (not wet) to blend. I would apply a second layer if I thought I needed it. I was lucky and didn’t have any issues with acne. I would get an occasional hormonal pimple but that was it.
Concealer:
I used a concealer that was similar to my skin tone. I would apply it to any redness that was peaking through and to the occasional pimple. I also tried to conceal any dark circles I had. I just swiped it on (in a straight line) and blended in with my fingers. I totally didn’t know about the triangle method (used for brightening the under eyes) back then.
Powder:
I would set my makeup with a light powder.
Bronzer:
Like I said, I never contoured my face. However, I wanted to look a little more tan (all my best friends were gorgeous tanned girls). I would apply bronzer all over my face in the hope to look a little more tan (it never really worked). I didn’t really have a specific way I applied it. I just swept it all over my face until I felt I had enough.
EYES:
I loved doing my eye makeup (always have). However, I thought that because I have blue eyes that I had to wear blue eyeshadow (HAHA). I would buy every blue eyeshadow I could find. I also was a HUGE fan of glitter. As you will see below, I had to glitterize everything! I was totally OBSESSED! I never used a primer. I didn’t think I needed one because I used a lot of cream products.
My favorite brand of makeup was Victoria Secret. I seriously owned the entire Beauty Rush line. I would save my money for the Semi-Annual sale and spend it all on makeup. I wanted all the blue eyeshadow, glitter, and lipglosses they made.
Eyeshadow:
I would start by applying a white shimmery eyeshadow to the brow bone. I would use my fingers or the sponge applicator that came with the eyeshadow. I would then apply a shimmery bright blue eyeshadow to the crease of my eyes. I would blend it in with my fingers. I would finish by applying a shimmery lighter blue shadow to the lid with my finger. I never blended my eyeshadow with brushes.
Eyeliner:
I always used a felt tip liquid eyeliner. I would use black eyeliner and make a small wing. My eyeliner almost never looked the same on both eyes (Let’s be real…this is ridiculously hard to do and I still struggle with it). I sometimes used colored liquid eyeliner in the same manner. Can you guess which color I chose??? Yup, you are right! BLUE!!!
I always topped my eyeliner with gold or silver glitter eyeliner (here starts the glitter obsession). I would simply apply it right on top of the black or colored eyeliner. I finished off the wings with a dot (yes a large plop) of glitter. I have no idea why I did this, but I did it every single day. I loved adding a fake jewel look with a dot of glitter on the ends of my wings.
Mascara:
I usually applied two coats of black mascara. I never curled my lashes with a lash curler. I was actually terrified of them. I also never wore fake lashes and totally didn’t want to even attempt them. I never put mascara on my bottom lashes. Of course, I added a heaping coat of glitter mascara on top of my black mascara because I didn’t have enough glitter already. I wasn’t kidding when I said I was OBSESSED with glitter. I thought the glitter would draw light to my eyes and make them bigger. Little did I know that I was trying to be a character from Twilight.
LIPS:
For my lips, I would apply a gloss. I always carried at least 5 glosses with me at all times. My favorites were Victoria Secret glosses or Bath and Body Works glosses. I think I owned every single gloss these two companies made. The minty ones were my favorite because they felt so cool on the lips.
FINAL TOUCHES:
To finish my look, I would always put my hair up in a ponytail. I have always had long hair and I wanted it out of my face. However, I would take two pieces of my long bangs and keep them out of the ponytail. I thought this looked good and that the hair framed my face. I now look back and laugh so hard! This look did nothing for my face AT ALL! I would then take pictures on my camera flip phone (I know you all know what I am talking about…HAHA). I would rock that duck face and totally thought I was being seductive and that all the guys would want me. HAHA…OH ELISABETH!!
What do you think of my high school makeup look? Can you relate to any of this? What did you wear in high school? Let me know in the comments below. Recreating this look has brought back so many memories.
5 Reasons I Loved Going Back To School:
1.) Back To School Supplies
I loved picking out new fun school supplies. Even if I never used them all, I always had to have a ton of fun school supplies. I loved everything glitter!! All my notebooks, binders, and pencils would be totally glittery and girlie. I also loved picking out locker accessories. I totally wanted my locker to be the best!
2.) Back To School Clothes
I loved getting new clothes (most girls do). I loved picking out fall and winter clothing because I loved to hide under my clothes. I wasn’t very confident and loved baggy clothing. I would always wear sweatpants or jeans and a t-shirt. I totally cared about my makeup, but I didn’t care about my clothing. I would wear sweaters in the summer too. I was so happy when fall rolled around because I wouldn’t be cooking underneath all the baggy clothing.
3.) Studying
I was (and still am) a total nerd. I LOVED to study. Yes, you totally heard me right. I loved to study and would constantly be studying. I wanted to be a doctor and only wanted A’s. I had straight A’s all my middle school and high school life. I was the kid everyone wanted for group projects because they knew they would get an A. They also knew I would do all the work because I wanted that A.
4.) New Teachers
I was totally the teacher’s pet. I loved to impress the teachers and get on their good side. I was a good girl (especially in middle school and beginning of high school) and the teachers loved my work ethic. I wanted to see how many awards I could get each year and this became a competition to me.
5.) Christmas Was Coming Soon
Back to school meant that Christmas was just around the corner. I love everything about Christmas and couldn’t wait until that day came. I would totally count the days. Christmas also meant snow and snow meant SNOW DAYS. Another thing I loved so much!
5 Lessons I Would Tell My 16-Year-Old Self:
5 Lessons I Would Tell My 16-Year-Old Self Click To Tweet1.) Boys Come and Go! Don’t Focus On Boys!
The right boy will come along at the right time. Don’t waste time and energy on trying to find a boyfriend.
As I got older, impressing boys became so important to me. I almost always had a boyfriend from the time I was 17 to the time I was 21. I wasted so much time and tears on them. I wish I would have just waited and focused on more important things in life…like making life long friends and enjoying life. I was so worried what boys thought about me and wanting them to like me. It was actually such a waste of time and pretty pathetic now that I think back. The right boy will come along at the right time. Don’t waste time and energy on trying to find a boyfriend. Enjoy your young life! Which brings me to my next point.

Looking back, I wish I would have enjoyed my high school life. I took forgranted the slow time.
I was so wrapped up in boys and grades that I didn’t enjoy much of my high school life. Of course, I did fun things and had awesome friends. However, I didn’t do as much as I could have. I wanted to grow up so bad and move away. Looking back, I wish I would have enjoyed my high school life. I took for granted the slow time. The older I get the faster time moves. When I was in high school, it felt like a year lasted forever. Today, I blink and a year is over. I miss those days where time seemed to stand still.
Looking back, I wish I would have enjoyed my high school life. I took for granted the slow time. Click To Tweet3.) Dreams Change
Take the time to explore other careers and learn more about the things you love!
All I wanted was to be a doctor and nothing was going to stop me. I spent countless hours studying and trying to be perfect. I wouldn’t listen to advice and just wanted to accomplish my dreams my way. I didn’t think I could be anything besides a doctor. I wish I would have explored more possibilities for my life instead of just focusing on one. I am doing that now that I am 26! Becoming a doctor was not what I thought it was going to be. The medical field is drastically changing and I am not sure I want to be a part of that change. My dreams are also changing and I wish I would have been okay with that at 16. It would have saved me quite a bit of pain. I wish I would have taken the time to explore other careers and learn more about the things I love (like makeup and writing).
Take the time to explore other careers and learn more about the things you love! Click To Tweet4.) My Parents Are Awesome
I wanted to move away so bad and when I finally did…all I wanted to do was move back home.
I wasn’t very close to my parents in high school. I spent many of my high school years fighting and arguing with my parents. They were protective (and for good reason). I would always tell them that I am 16 and can do what I want. That is such an immature thing to say. Now that I have been in the “real” world, I would be perfectly okay with not knowing everything I know now. I now see that my parents were just protecting me because they loved me. Life is short and you never know when it will be your last day with those that you love. Never take that for granted. My parents really did want what was best for me and they did an amazing job raising me. I wish I would have respected them more and enjoyed my time with them. I wanted to move away so bad and when I finally did…all I wanted to do was move back home.
5.) Life is an Adventure…Give More Than You Receive
Your focus should be on giving more than you receive. Giving to others will bring joy into your life. Give of your time and resources.
Life truly is an adventure. You really don’t know what lies around the corner or what will happen tomorrow. Take every day one day at a time and enjoy every minute. Do something you love every day. Your focus should be on giving more than you receive. Giving to others will bring joy into your life. Give of your time and resources. Have fun and laugh a little every single day. I wish I would have know these things when I was 16. You can never get your high school days back. If you are in high school now, enjoy every minute of it!

Deary deary me it’s ridiculous how on point this whole post is! I were the same with some of the things I did… Apparently blue eyeshadow is what guys liked so obviously the teenage me had to ALWAYS go over the top on blue shadow, plus I thought it made up for me not having blue eyes, which I’ve always wanted and obsessed over. I bought blue coloured contacts once so I could start wearing those, only trouble is I were terrified of putting them in and never managed it so they turned out to be a huge waste. With eyeshadow I also only ever used one colour and NEVER blended, I didn’t even know that blending were a thing hahaha! I hated lipstick and were 100% a gloss girl, it’s the complete opposite now. I’d never heard of contour or highlight, and never wore concealer although I were in desperate need of it with a constant ridiculous outbreak of spots. I were actually better then with protecting my skin than I am now, as in the summer I sometimes used a little gradual tan lotion with added SPF. Oh and as for brows, I were convinced that mine were the ugliest bushiest things I’d ever seen, all the girls had a thing for overly thin barely there brows.. I didn’t want anything that drastic, but I ended up with it being the case sometimes as I’d slip and take half of my brow away hahaha, oops!
Something that I’ve always envied about America is that there isn’t a uniform in schools, in England there is, and I have never been able to look at navy blue in the same way since, the colour instantly reminds me of my hell hole high school and is an instant put off. The only thing I secretly liked about my uniform is the tie, although to be seen as cool you totally couldn’t wear it correctly. It were the Avril Lavigne in me that liked ties. I still love stationary even now, I bought some new things yesterday and it’s got me so excited!
I absolutely love the lessons you included in this post, spot on! I just love this post in general, there’s sooo much information and you definitely took me on a trip down memory lane. Your make-up is still cute as a button even though you’re showcasing the old ways haha!
Omg, I loved everything about this post. The first part was too funny, and your lists were so heartfelt. I was brainwashed into blue eyes=dark grey shadow, which basically made me look like a total zombie! Or just really tired all the time. I think everyone is attracted to sparkles at some point; for me it was with those “diamond shine” lipgloss things, my middle school friends were all into all over facial glitter…a true case of Twilight vampire lol I loved this post girl!
Haha yay!! I am so so so happy you liked it girl!! Means so much coming from a funny girl like you! And I totally wore dark grey shadow too!! Doesn’t work haha!! Omgsh I totally remember those! My best friend was obsessed and owned every single color haha!
*Okay, let’s see if my comment posts this time! 😛 *
I’m thinking I will have to moosh up Back To School and Retro next week – soooo busy all September! (I’m old enough, I can do that. Hah.)
You probably have already, but please, please, please tell your parents how cool they are, how much you now appreciate how protective they were of you – all that stuff. Anything you can think of. I always hear about people regretting not having told their parents things like that and then they’re gone. Thankfully, I’m such a goober I would just pop off with “Dad, thanks for dragging me out of bed that one morning to go out into the country and see Halley’s Comet” or “Mom, thank you for teaching me how to cross-stitch. I really love doing it and it’s all your fault”. of that, it’s one thing I have no regrets about. 🙂
Okay – let’s see if this posts… *laffs*
I found it!! It totally spammed it again! I am trying to find the setting where I can change it haha!
Haha!! I would love to see your post combining the two themes!! That would totally be awesome!!! I know your Retro post is going to be amazing!!!
I have told my parents and I will definitely tell them many more times haha. They need to hear it all the time!! And that is so cool!! I am totally going to tell me parents more often!! Thanks so much for the reminder!!
I’ve been loving seeing these videos on YouTube. I didn’t use primer, bronzer, highlighter, brows, or anything like that in high school. I wore Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation that I applied with a dry sponge, Double Wear concealer on any blemishes, Physicians Formula powder to set my face, Estee Lauder blush, mascara, and lip gloss. I never wore eyeliner or bronzer and I only wore eye shadow occassionally. We’ve come a long way!
Me too girl!! They are just so fun!! I love seeing what people used to look like! Some are really extreme haha! Wow girl!! You had it together with all that high-end makeup! I only owned drugstore makeup in HS haha!! I totally agree that we have come a very long way haha!!
Yay I love this post!! High school days are definitely all about the glitter! I used to wear lots of lipgloss too! Those gifs are so creative though, what do you use to make them? The 5 reasons are so true! I kept thinking about boys instead of my grades in school but I wouldn’t really change my past though, I am glad with where I am now. I have also seen the “how I did my makeup in high school” tag on youtube going round and I plan to make one on my channel too!
Haha they totally are girl!! I went glitter overboard haha! I just couldn’t get enough!! I use Ezgif.com and they are so easy to create! I am in love with making them haha!! I totally agree. The past makes us into who we are today. However, I would have done things a little different if I could do it over haha! OOOO I can’t wait to see it! Let me know when you do!!
This was amazing and fun to read and watch! 🙂
https://alifyalifestyle.com/
AWWW that means so much to me! Thanks love!
I loved this post! I love the whole glitter obsession! I was no where near that brave! Some great advice and gifs too! I love ow you include different topics in one post! xo
AWW that means so much to me girl!! I think this is one of the longest posts I have ever wrote haha! I totally need to start writing much more! I love it! I had a total issue with glitter haha. I went crazy! I still love it, but don’t usually go overboard haha! You’re the best!
heyyy!lolim in high school (year 9 but i think that would be a grade 8 because i think grades are 1 behind years) i just wear quite a bit of mascara, bronz-ey browny slightly glittery eyesgadow, winged eyline, foundatoin and lipstick. lol i have a few bruches and sponges, but i use my hands, you know those mac glassy foundation post, yeah?well i smack it onto the top of my hand till teh foudation falls onto my hands!!loved your post:)yoru winged eyeline is awesommmmeeeee!!i still have to use tape on my eyes if a want a more bolder wing (-pathetic.i know!)
byeeexxx<3
AWWWW that is so awesome girl!! You have your makeup down!! That sounds perfect for a back to school look! Haha I sometimes use my hands still. I love using brushes now though haha! You’re so sweet!!! I love the tape trick!! I use it too if I want a very strong wing!!
I loved reading your post and getting to know more about you 🙂 You are awesome!
AWWWWWWW you are so sweet girl!! This post was so much fun to write!!
Girl you used sponges to apply your foundation! That’s SO cool! I was only using my fingers and I didn’t even know that foundation brushes and sponges excited, I was only using brushes for the powderish products like blusher and face powder. I love those gifs, really really really love them!! You worked really hard for this post, I can tell… And the results are amazing. I agree with your sayings, like what you would say to your younger self, I have so many things to tell to mine too but I guess learning from our mistakes is something that makes us better people and stronger sometimes.
Haha I totally did. I used my fingers if I was in a hurry though haha. I never knew to wet the sponge though so much of my foundation was picked up by the sponge haha.
AWWWW girl you have made my day!! This post was so much fun to write!! I really have been obsessed with making gifs and want to put them in all my posts haha!!
I totally agree! We all learn from are mistakes. They shape and make us into the women we are today!!
I was in the group too that was somehow brainwashed into thinking blue eyes = blue eyeshadow. And shimmers and glitters and cream shadows OH MY. This is pretty damn accurate to me in high school. I love your gifs. Seriously freaking awesome every time.
Haha!!!! Hilarious!!! I am so glad someone knows the pain!! Haha!! I look back and just see Mimi from the Drew Carey Show…especially the way I did my eyes haha! No blending at all lol. Omgsh we were twins girl!! We would have totally been best friends in HS haha!! I have so much fun doing the GIFs. They crack me up when I see them finished!!
This is Hilarious and so awesome. Mine would be pretty humorous; yet the funny thing is: the trends from my HS years are the ones that have recently resurfaced: ‘the whole grunge-y thing’. Brown lipstick..flannels and slip dresses! Everything except the pencil thin eyebrows. ( I had the whole drew Barrymore/mad love look thing going on back in the 90’s 😂
Haha!!! I never got into the grunge look. However, there were so many girls in my class that did lol. I would LOVE to see how you did your makeup in HS!! Omgsh the pencil thin eyebrows!! I totally remember those haha! I hope that trend NEVER comes back haha!!
And oh, my dreams keep changing. I thought I wanted to do automotive when I got out of high school but that fell through when I was unable to go to UTI. So I switched to psychology, and studied all for it in college, huge waste of time, because now I have a year left and want to explore my career options but I’m unable to. I decided to say no to psychology this year. Too complicated to explain lol. And now…idk. My husband is telling me to do blogging full time. Not sure how well that would work. I still have a lot to learn about this haha.
Anyway, my point is, (after all that, really? Lmao) that were never gonna be sure about what we wanna do. We’re always gonna want something more. But until then, we will keep searching. I still don’t know what I wanna do, and frankly, I don’t think I want a big hotshot career. Yeah it would pay more, but I’d rather do something that I enjoy doing and makes me happy. That’s what life is about right? Enjoying every single thing you do? 🙂
I am so glad someone understands what I am going through!! I never thought my dream would change and that I would be okay with it! I know a ton of psych majors that changed their degrees or finished and then went back to do something else. It is a very hard field to get into and you pretty much need a Phd!
You totally should do blogging full time girl. That is what I am working towards too. I research about it every single day haha. We could totally learn together. I have been thinking about started a separate channel/page on my blog for this very thing. It would be about tips, tricks, advice, etc on becoming a FULL TIME beauty blogger. Do you think there would be interest in this? Let me know!
You are an amazing blogger and your posts are perfection. You definitely could take it full time!!!
And girl, I couldn’t have said it better myself! I am right there with you. Life isn’t all about money and things. It is about being with those you love and have the best time you can. You shouldn’t hate every day of your life because you are in a career you can’t stand. I would rather make 20,000 and love my career than make 100,000 and hate ever day. We will figure it out girl. I am so glad to call you my friend and that we met through blogging!! If I never go far in blogging, the relationships I have formed here are worth every moment. It’s truly amazing!!
I know right? Lol. I’ve tried looking into careers that didn’t need a PhD, but there were none. And my teachers even told us it was a competitive field. And I looked into it, and apparently it takes like 7 years. No way! I’ll be so deep in debt when I’m done lol.
Haha we totally should learn together! Even if I don’t completely become a full time blogger. Lol. And I think that would be a great idea! I’ve been trying to find more tips on blogging but hardly anyone gives any advice like how to start from scratch. I did find ONE blog that it’s all about that, but I guess it’s self-hosted through WordPress? I’m not sure. I’ll try to find the link to the blog and send it to you. But you got MY interest! Lol.
I feel the same way! 😭 I love you! These friendships aren’t in vain! lol.
That is what I am saying!! I hate debt so much haha!! I totally agree!! When I was researching no one really tells you how or the truth about running a full time blog. I want to write about what you really need to do and that you won’t make money instantly haha! They say all that to get you to sign up for their affiliates and get paid. I will write for both self-hosted and non self-hosted blogs haha. Because I have been both lol. You’re the best girl!!! I love you tons and I completely agree!
I know! I have a small debt for a loan I borrowed that I’m trying to pay off. As someone with a job that doesn’t pay (mommy full time lol) it sucks lol. But when I start school, they’ll halt my payments. I’ll still pay since they won’t charge interest. Hopefully get it paid much sooner! *fingers crossed*
And they really don’t! They’re usually so vague! From what I can see, blogging full time really is a full time job. I mean, or seen how much work goes on your blog! I’m amazed! And it still needs to be maintained and OMG! It just looks like a lot of work! I’m so proud of you for keeping up with it! Better than I could for having just started, what, last year, right?!
If you do make that blog, I think it would help a lot of people! Especially now, blogging is coming back as a thing lol.
Hehe! ❤️ lots of love here! Lol
You got this girl!! I have one loan to finish from school too! I paid off my 13,000 loan so you got this girl!!
It totally is a full time job haha!! I put a ton of hours in every single week and I know you do too haha! And you are so right!! Blogging is definitely coming back and coming back strong!!
Thank you! I’m almost done with it too!
Lol yeah! Compared to when I first started blogging I put an insane amount of hours on my blog now lol. I’m about to put in a ton more before school starts so I can have content for October lol.
You go girl!!!!
Here it is!!!

She has another blog called The Wonder Forest where she creates templates for blogs. Some of her designs are very pretty! You should check her out!
http://www.thewonderforest.com
I definitely will girl!! Thanks so much!!
You’re welcome!!
Omg a long post! Lol.
I love how you did a step by step makeup routine. 🙂 those gifs were hilarious!!! The glitter thing made me lol because I had a friend whose nickname was “sparkles” and she’s wear glitter on her eyes lol. No eyeshadow though lol.
And great advice to your 16 year old self! I wasted time on boys too! Although, one of those boys I wasted time on is now my hubby lol.
I agree with the parent thing. I love my parents and I’m closer to them now more than ever. And now as a mom, I totally understand their worries. I’m gonna be dealing with the same stuff I put them through when my baby gets older lol. 🙂
Haha I didn’t think I was going to write such a long post! However, when I started writing it…I just couldn’t stop. The ideas kept flowing haha! I worked ALL DAY on it!! It usually only takes me 1 hour to write a post haha! And that is totally hilarious!! I can totally relate to her! I was OBSESSED!!! I thought the more glitter I could wear, the more amazing I would look haha!!!
AWWW that is too darn cute girl. At least your wasted time, wasn’t completely wasted haha!
I am so much closer to my parents now and totally realize how immature I really was. All those arguments just weren’t worth it. And hehe you just might! However, your son is the cutest thing in the world!! I hope he stays that way haha!
Haha no problem! You always write good content anyway 🙂
Yes, I guess I got lucky huh? But don’t worry, your “the one” will show. Unless Joseph is the one. Hmm? 😉
Who knows? My kiddo is already a trouble maker. He’s all looks but is a tiny gremlin lol.
Haha he totally is!! He is amazing! Any guy that will work on a makeup blog with me has to be the one…right?? haha!! Haha that is hilarious girl!!!
Gotta be!!! He’s so willing to work alongside you. It takes a lot for a guy to come around like that haha.
Haha it really does!! He truly is the best!! And I totally need to be nicer to him haha!
